A new outlet for articles on supply chain vulnerability? Perhaps. And actually, it’s not that new, since the journal has been in existence for some 16 years, but I haven’t come across the Journal of Marketing Channels as a source for papers on supply chain disruption before. That is why I was so surprised to find Sources of Supply Chain Disruptions, Factors That Breed Vulnerability, and Mitigating Strategies by Karen E Stecke and Sanjay Kumar. Here they develop a classification framework for supply chain catastrophes and the appropriate mitigation strategies for the various types of smaller and bigger supply chain disasters that can occur.

Today’s article is a continuation (or should it rightfully have been the precursor?) of an article I presented two weeks ago. Supply chain risk management and performance: A guiding framework for future development is written by Clare Brindley and Bob Ritchie. In so many ways it is very similar to An emergent framework for supply chain risk management and performance measurement, another article by Clare Brindley and Bob Ritchie that has previously been reviewed on this blog, but in so many other ways it is also very different.

This paper was suggested by one of my readers, and upon reading it I must admit that it IS one of the better papers on supply chain risk management I have come across this year: An emergent framework for supply chain risk management and performance measurement by Bob Ritchie and Clare Brindley. Not only do the authors convey in a clear and precise manner what supply chain risk management is all about; they also construct a framework that provides a description of the factors that affect the nature of the risk management responses in particular situations.

Less supply chain disruptions with vendor managed inventory?

How does a traditional supply chain compare to a vendor managed inventory supply chain when it comes to performance during disruptions? In her 2005 paper, The impact of transportation disruptions on supply chain performance, Martha Wilson found out, not surprisingly, that vendor managed inventory (VMI) fares better than the traditional retail managed inventory, even when looking at the whole supply chain: Raw Material Supplier – Tier 2 Supplier   – Tier 1 Supplier  – Warehouse – Retailer – Customer.
