Behind this perhaps cryptic title (for some, but not for others, especially those in the BCM industry) is the Contingency Planning & Management Conference (CPM 2010 East) that is coming up November 3-4 in New York City. It offers a 2-day, 4-track advanced-level program taught by expert faculty in small, classroom settings.  Joseph Bruno, Commissioner of the NYC Office of Emergency Management, will also be this year’s keynote speaker. Humanitarian Relief Supply Chains

Managing disaster supply chains has much in common with managing supply chain disruptions,  and a disruption may not differ much from a disaster in both scope and scale. What are the key supply chain factors for improving disaster supply chain management?  The International Journal of Production Economics is perhaps not the first journal you would look up in order to answer that question. Nonetheless, their latest special issue features no less than 13 articles on this particular subject, bringing together an interdisciplinary group of scholars with a keen interest in the effective functioning of supply chains in the face of human disaster. As such ,this issue is an excellent introduction to an emerging field: the study of disaster supply chains. Some of the articles which have already been presented on this blog, and many more are to come.

Call for papers: Humanitarian Logistics

With resilience as one the main themes for this blog, from time to time I have written posts on disaster management and humanitarian logistics. Now there is a new source for knowledge on these matters, the Journal of Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Management (JHLSCM). The journal is targeted at academics and practitioners in humanitarian public and private sector organizations working on all aspects of humanitarian logistics and supply chain management. Actually, the journal is not there yet, since the first issue is planned for 2011. However, the first call for papers has just been announced.

Supply Chain Risk Management – as seen from Space

Is it possible to reconcile supply chain vulnerability, risk and supply chain management with corporate governance, business continuity, national security and emergency planning? In a 2006 article, Reconciling supply chain vulnerability, risk and supply chain management, by Helen Peck, she attempts to do just that, hence my analogy of looking down at supply chains from Space – in order to really see the big picture. Because, as far as supply chain risk goes, some, if not all, stakeholders are found far beyond the individual supply chain and Helen Peck does an excellent  job at explaining why.

Supply Chain Management – Emergency Management

Yes. No doubt about it. Reduction, Readiness, Response and Recovery are four key elements in the New Zealand Civil Defence Emergency Management Act 2002. But how can this be related to supply chain management? Well, from time to time any supply chain will face the possibility of being disrupted, severed, delayed or severely impacted.
